Bio

Rob Chaney's affiliation with Tallahassee Community College athletics began as a volunteer in August 1998. Now in his 24th season overall with the Eagles, Chaney assumed the athletic director responsibilities on January 1, 2009, and was promoted to Director of Athletics on April 1, 2013. He supervises all coaches, staff and interns and oversees all of the department's external and internal affairs.

The 2021-22 season marks Chaney's 13th in the director's chair and during that time, the Eagles have enjoyed tremendous success. The highlight of his TCC career occurred in 2018 when his first hire, Franqua "Q" Bedell, guided the women's basketball team to its first-ever NJCAA Division I National Championship and the College's first in any sport since 1994. His teams have also captured four Panhandle Conference championships and three NJCAA region championships and appered in a total of ten national championship events.

Success hasn't been limited to the athletic arena. Team GPAs have reached all-time highs and as a result, 73 student-athletes and 21 teams have earned academic honors from the NJCAA. Three student-athletes - Meagan Oster (softball, 2011), Elisa Cecchetti (softball, 2017) and Cole Vann (baseball, 2018) - have received the Panhandle Conference's highest academic honor, the Mickey Englett (female) and Dr. Dale O'Daniel (male) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.

Growth has also marked Chaney's tenure, as four teams have been added to the Eagles' portfolio. In 2016, women’s cross country hit the trails, the College’s first new sport in 21 years. Men's cross country debuted in 2017 and Spring 2019 ushered in the newest teams - men's and women's track and field.

In 2017, Chaney oversaw the opening of the Refreshment Services Pepsi & Vending Athletic Training Center, a facility that more than doubled the square footage of the department's previous training room. In 2015, a grant from the TCC Foundation supported the launch of a livestream initiative that expanded coverage of home athletic events to include all sports. He is currently collaborating with the TCC Foundation on a $3 million campaign with an emphasis on facility improvements and scholarships.

Chaney's efforts have yielded a pair of individual honors. In 2017, he was recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) as an Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for Junior/Community Colleges. In 2018, he was one of three TCC representatives to receive the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award.

After volunteering with the Eagles in 1998-99, Chaney joined TCC on a full-time basis in December 1999, and for the next 13 ½ years, worked as a communications specialist in the College's Office of Communications & Public Information while also being involved in all aspects of athletics. When he succeeded Brian Anweiler as athletic director in 2009, Chaney, like his four predecessors - Anweiler, Mike McLeod, Mike Gillespie and Jeb Blackburn - assumed a dual-role at the College.

In the spring of 2013, Chaney transitioned to a full-time role as director of athletics and has direct oversight of all external and internal operations for the department.

As a member of the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team, Chaney supervises all coaches and staff members; manages the budget for the entire department; ensures compliance with institution, state and national standards; heads up all fund-raising efforts; and coordinates media relations and marketing efforts for the department, including social media platforms and the College's athletics web site, TCCeagles.com.

An active member of NATYCAA (National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators), Chaney currently serves as 1st Vice President and chaired the communications committee from 2016-21. He is also serving a term on the executive committee for the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and remains a member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).

A member of the Florida College System Activities Association's (FCSAA) Council for Athletic Affairs (CAA), Chaney began a two-year term as CAA Chair on July 1, 2021. He is past chair (2015-18) of the Panhandle Conference, recently completed two full terms as FCSAA State Chair for women's basketball (2016-21) and, since 2006, has filled the role of scoreboard and web site coordinator for the FCSAA.

Chaney also represents the College on the Tallahassee Sports Council.

A native of Section, Ala., Chaney graduated from Section High School in 1992, where he lettered in three sports - basketball, baseball and swimming - and was valedictorian of his senior class. He graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's in mass communication in 1996 and earned his master's in Christian education from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 2007.

He is married to the former Casi Stone, and the couple has a ten-year old daughter, Aubri Leigh.
