Sports Medicine

An important part of every athletic program is the care and treatment student-athletes receive from its sports medicine staff.

In 2015, Tallahassee Community College hired its first-ever full-time athletic trainer, or ATC, Chris McHargue, who coordinates and oversees treatment of the Eagles' more than 80 student-athletes. The Eagles also enjoy a strong relationship with nationally-renowned Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic.

An ATC is an individual who has completed a four-year degree in a limited-entry Sports Medicine program and has passed a national exam that enables that person to become certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification.

Once certified, the individual can provide professional care to the population of student-athletes under the following scope of practice:

  • Provide care and educate individuals about prevention of athletic injuries;
  • Recognition, evaluation and immediate care of injuries;
  • Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
  • Health care administration
  • Professional development and responsibilities
