Cook, Wilson named TCC’s top scholar-athletes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 17, 2016) – Tallahassee Community College's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recognized its top scholar-athletes during April's Student Leadership & Service Awards luncheon, hosted by the College's Student Government Association (SGA) and Department of Campus and Civic Engagement (CCE).

Softball's Alexandra Cook and baseball's Mac Wilson were named TCC Athletics' Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively.

Cook, a sophomore pitcher from Delta, British Columbia, Canada, was a mainstay in the Eagles' rotation the past two seasons, compiling a career record of 19-13. As a freshman, she was recognized as NJCAA Region 8 and NJCAA Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week in February 2015 en route to first-team All-Panhandle Conference honors.

Cook has signed a national letter of intent with Presbyterian College, where she will continue her athletic career while majoring in pharmacy.

Wilson, a sophomore third baseman from Jacksonville, Fla., was recently named second-team all-Panhandle Conference by league coaches after batting .341 with 10 doubles and 32 RBIs in 52 games during the 2016 campaign. He posted a career .301 average and 52 RBIs in 96 games with the Eagles.

An accounting major, Wilson is slated to return to his hometown this fall and join the baseball program at the University of North Florida.

Academically, both Cook and Wilson were named all-academic by both the Panhandle Conference (PC) and Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) in 2015 and are on track to repeat those honors later this spring.

Other scholar-athlete of the year nominees were Jahvaughn Powell, men's basketball and Lindsay John, women's basketball.

TCC student Grayson Elmer was also presented the Eddie Barnes Heart of a Champion Award. Elmer, a native of Tallahassee, has spent the last three seasons as the team manager for the Eagles' women's basketball team.

The award, established by SGA and CCE, is presented in honor of Barnes, who retired as the Eagles' head men's basketball coach in 2015 following a 14-year stint at the College and 40 years overall in the coaching profession.
