DuBoise, Mabini named Scholar-Athletes of the Year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 28, 2015) – Taesha DuBoise and Chad Mabini have been named Tallahassee Community College Athletics’ Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively. 

The announcement was made during the College’s recent Golden Eagle Leadership & Service Awards Night, presented by the Department of Campus and Civic Engagement. 

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year is awarded to student-athletes who exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete both in the in the classroom and on the field.  

To be eligible for the award each nominee is required to carry a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with faculty, staff, coaches and administrators. Athletic accomplishments, volunteerism and civic activities and citizenship are also taken into consideration. 

DuBoise, a member of Tallahassee’s softball team, won the award for Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  DuBoise is a sophomore from Stockbridge, Ga., and a two-year letter winner at the College. She has already started receiving postseason accolades for the 2015 season that includes First-team All-Panhandle Conference honors.  In 2014, DuBoise received All-Panhandle Conference honors and was named a FCSAA and Panhandle Conference All-Academic honoree. 

Mabini, a member of Tallahassee’s baseball team, won the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.  A sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., Mabini was named to the 2013 All-Panhandle Conference second-team and is a two-year letter winner with the Eagles.  Mabini served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee from 2012-15. In 2013, he won All-Academic honors from both the FCSAA and the Panhandle Conference. 

Other Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees were Cameron Smith (men’s basketball) and Benedicta Makakala (women’s basketball). 

As part of the awards banquet, TCC’s Student Government Association presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to retiring men’s basketball coach Eddie Barnes, and beginning next year, TCC Athletics will present the Eddie Barnes Leadership Award to a student-athlete who demonstrates exemplary leadership both on and off the court or field.
