Former Eagles climb the coaching ranks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (August 11, 2015) – Two individuals with ties to Tallahassee Community College – one as a player, one as a coach – recently received promotions in the college coaching ranks.

Micah Posey, a former Eagle baseball pitching standout, was named assistant baseball coach at Elon University while former women’s basketball assistant coach T.J. Royals was named to the same post at Texas Southern University.

Posey, who hails from Tallahassee and prepped at North Florida Christian School, played for Coach Mike McLeod’s Eagles in 2002 and was a first-team All-Panhandle Conference and second-team FCSAA All-State performer.

Selected by the Anaheim Angels in the 15th round of Major League Baseball’s 2001 First-year Player Draft, Posey signed a professional contract following his freshman season and played in the Angels’ organization through 2007.

Since joining the Elon staff prior to the 2013 season as the volunteer assistant, Posey has worked with the Phoenix pitchers. In his first season at Elon, the program won the Southern Conference title.

Royals, meanwhile, was the top assistant on then-head women’s basketball coach Teresa Atkinson’s staff from 2007-12. He then spent one season as an assistant at Panhandle Conference rival Gulf Coast State College (2012-13) before taking a graduate assistant position on the Texas Southern staff two years ago, where he assisted the program in numerous capacities including on-court duties, skill development and academic monitoring.

During his tenure at Tallahassee, he helped guide the Eagles to the 2010 FCSAA State Championship Game, where they fell one win short of a trip to the NJCAA Tournament in Salina, Kan.

Since arriving at Texas Southern, Royals has been joined by another former Eagle – point guard Sarah Williams, who he coached during his final season in Tallahassee (2011-12), is a member of the Lady Tigers’ team.
