Eagles-Indians clash in key women’s contest, final game for Barnes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 17, 2015) – On Saturday evening, head men’s basketball coach Eddie Barnes won his final game at Tallahassee Community College’s Bill Hebrock Eagledome. Tonight, his coaching career will come to a close at the site of, arguably, two of his biggest victories.

Tallahassee and arch-rival Chipola College will close the 2014-15 regular season with a doubleheader beginning at 6:30 p.m. eastern with women’s action. Barnes and the Eagle men are scheduled to take the floor at 8:30 p.m.

Tallahassee rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat Gulf Coast State College, 74-70, on Saturday in Barnes’ final home game as Tallahassee’s head coach. On Tuesday, the Eagles will go for the season sweep against the Indians.

Chipola’s Milton H. Johnson Health Center has been the site to many great battles between Barnes’ Eagles and Chipola. None, however, will match the epic 2006 FCSAA State Championship Game, won by Tallahassee, 98-96 in triple overtime, on Nigel Johnson’s three-pointer from the top of the key with 1.7 seconds left.

The win sent Tallahassee to the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, where it advanced to the national championship game.

Five years later, the Eagles duplicated the feat, knocking off Chipola, 61-52, to give Barnes his second state championship as the Eagles’ head coach.

And though postseason implications may be void in Tuesday’s second game, they are all over the court in the women’s tilt.

Tallahassee enters play one-half game ahead of Gulf Coast State College for the Panhandle Conference’s third and final postseason berth.

A win would assure the Eagles of no worse than a one-game playoff against the Commodores and force Gulf Coast State to close with wins against Northwest Florida State College and Pensacola State College. A loss, however, would open the door for Gulf Coast State to claim the berth outright with two victories.

Meanwhile, Chipola and Northwest Florida State are still battling for the PC Championship and the league’s No. 1 seed at next month’s FCSAA State Tournament.
