Eagles welcome arch-rival Chipola for diamond twin bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 20, 2014) - Tallahassee Community College’s baseball and softball teams will be in action simultaneously on Friday – at home, and both teams will play host to arch-rival Chipola College in key Panhandle Conference match-ups.

The action begins in doubleheader fashion at 4 p.m. at the TCC Softball Complex as the nationally-ranked Eagles look to stay atop the conference standings. Already off to its best start in PC play in 14 seasons, NJCAA No. 11 Tallahassee (20-7, 4-0 PC) is also ranked third in the FCSAA Softball Coaches’ Poll.

Thanks to Monday’s rainout at Gulf Coast State College, Tallahassee hasn’t played since Saturday when it swept a doubleheader from Pensacola State College. FCSAA No. 5 Chipola (21-11, 1-3), meanwhile, split a doubleheader on Wednesday against Gulf Coast State, including a 15-2 loss in the nightcap.

Friday marks the beginning of what could be the defining stretch of the Eagles’ season – Tallahassee has five doubleheaders on the calendar over the next eight days. After traveling to Panama City on Sunday for the makeup date against Gulf Coast State, the Eagles host Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday, travel to Pensacola State Thursday and return home next Saturday for a date with Gulf Coast State.

By then, Tallahassee should have a good idea of what it will be playing for during the second half of the expanded PC slate – seeding in the FCSAA Tournament or a potential PC Championship.

Championship aspirations will also be in the air next door at Eagle  Field when Tallahassee and Chipola continue its three-game series at 5 p.m.

The Eagles and Indians are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the FCSAA Baseball Coaches’ Poll, and both teams carry NJCAA rankings into the showdown – Tallahassee, No. 4 and Chipola, No. 8.

Chipola (24-6) scored a 4-3, come-from-behind victory in Wednesday’s series opener to improve to 3-1 in league play while dropping Tallahassee (30-7) to 2-2.

The Eagles will turn to sophomore lefty Victor Cole (5-0, 1.07 ERA) in hopes of scoring the series equalizer.
