Tallahassee takes hold of No. 1 ranking in FCSAA men’s basketball coaches’ poll

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 11, 2014) – The last time Tallahassee Community College’s men’s basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the FCSAA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll was November 10, 2009.

That team eventually played for the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA State Championship and included the likes of @JMyles905@Mar_vell and future NBA player @BernardJame5

Now, five years later and off to a 4-0 start, Tallahassee, on Tuesday, was rewarded with the No. 1 ranking in the first FCSAA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll of the regular season.

The Eagles jumped out of a tie for the No. 4 ranking and into the top spot after each of the top three teams, as well as co-No. 4 College of Central Florida, in the preseason poll suffered defeats during the first ten days of the season.

Tallahassee received ten of the 19 first-place votes and 177 total points in the voting to narrowly place ahead of No. 2 Northwest Florida State College, who received seven first-place votes and 170 total points.

Tallahassee and Northwest Florida State, who was ranked No. 6 in the preseason, led a major shakeup at the top of the rankings.

Southern Conference schools Eastern Florida State College and Miami Dade College checked in at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, after being ranked Nos. 7 and 9, respectively, in the preseason poll.

Daytona State College and Hillsborough Community College share the No. 5 ranking followed by Central Florida, Broward College, Pensacola State College and Santa Fe College.

In the women’s poll, Tallahassee maintained its No. 4 ranking after a 2-0 start, which included Saturday’s 94-59 win over previous No. 6 St. Petersburg College.

Chipola College remained No. 1 followed by Northwest Florida State and Gulf Coast State College.

Florida State College at Jacksonville is ranked fifth followed by Central Florida and Daytona State at No. 6, Eastern Florida State, and Hillsborough and Santa Fe, who are tied for ninth.
