TCC's Saiko, Tewksbury headed to South Carolina

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (August 28, 2012) – Shortstop Graham Saiko and pitcher Cameron Tewksbury, 2012 teammates at Tallahassee Community College, are trading in the Eagles' blue and gold for the garnet and black of the Southeastern Conference's South Carolina Gamecocks.

South Carolina signed Saiko to a national letter of intent while Tewksbury gave his commitment to the school as an invited walk-on.

"We could not be happier for these two great Eagles," said Tallahassee head coach Mike McLeod. "South Carolina is recognized as one of the top programs in the country, and we are very proud that they (Saiko and Tewksbury) have made it to that level."

Saiko played his freshman season at Oklahoma State University before transferring to Tallahassee, where he promptly turned in one of the finest defensive seasons in school history.

Saiko posted a .958 fielding percentage, committing only ten errors in 239 chances and was named the Panhandle Conference Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to earning first-team honors by both the PC coaches and the Florida College System Activities Association.

Offensively, Saiko was just as spectacular, batting .342 with one home run and 43 RBI. He was second on the squad in hits (54), slugging percentage (.506) and RBI and had a team-high 21 doubles. He also shared team-high honors with 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts.

Saiko's accolades included being named an NJCAA Exemplary Academic Achievement honoree and the Buddy Kisner Scholar-Athlete of the Year, given annually to the PC's top baseball scholar-athlete. He was also named All-Academic by both the PC and FCSAA.

Tewksbury, meanwhile, picked up second-team all-conference honors after a 5-5 record and 2.84 ERA in 16 games as a sophomore. The southpaw totaled 76.0 innings on the mound, struck out 58 and held opponents to a .229 batting average.

Academically, he was named All-Academic by both the FCSAA and Panhandle Conference.

Recent history says Saiko and Tewksbury will be joining, arguably, the nation's top college baseball program. The Gamecocks won the NCAA College World Series in both 2010 and 2011 and brought home a runners-up finish in 2012.
