Gordon State downs Eagles on day two of TCC Diamond Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 8, 2013) - FCSAA No. 2 Tallahassee Community College and Gordon (Ga.) State College played a one-run game for the second time in as many days on Friday at the TCC Diamond Classic but this time with a different outcome.

After Tallahassee won 9-8 in Thursday's Classic opener, Gordon State evened the score on Friday, picking up a 4-3 win for its first victory of the season. Gordon State's victory also snapped Tallahassee's five-game losing streak, dropping the Eagles' record to 8-2.

Jordan Dwyer broke a 3-3 tie with a two-out single in the top of fifth, scoring Brian Jacobs with what proved to be the game-winning run.

NIck Baker was charged with the loss for Tallahassee.

Josh Wirsu notched the win for Gordon State, tossing six innings and striking out seven. Robert Daniel recorded the final three outs for the save.

Tallahassee got to Wirsu in its first at-bat. John Price, Jr.'s two-out single scored Clay Fenwick and Trent Higginbothem to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Tallahassee took the two-run lead to the fourth before Gordon State rallied. With runners on first and second and nobody out, a defensive error opened the door for the Highlanders, who eventually knocked out Tallahassee starter Dan VanSickle and scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles tied things up in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Graganella executed the squeeze bunt to perfection, plating Tyler York from third.

The TCC Diamond Classic will conclude on Saturday with Tallahassee playing a doubleheader against Central Alabama Community College beginning at 1 p.m.

Tallahassee Community College Athletics would like to thank the Leon County Tourist Development Council for its support of the TCC Diamond Classic.
