Deckert, Stanley shut out St. Johns River State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 28, 2013) - FCSAA No. 4 Tallahassee Community College (15-3) ended the month of February with a 5-0 win over No. 9 St. Johns River State College (14-9) on Thursday evening at Eagle Field.

Nick Deckert (2-0) scattered three hits over the first six innings then handed things off to Jared Stanley, who went the final three innings to preserve the shutout and notch his first save of the season.

Deckert (4) and Stanley (5) combined for nine strikeouts on the night, giving the Eagles' pitching staff a total of 22 in its last two games.

Tallahassee scratched out only eight hits on Thursday, but by the time St. Johns River State starter and losing pitcher Matt Pennington exited after six innings, the Eagles had managed to put four runs on the board.

Trent Higginbothem led off the second inning with a single and later scored on James Abbatinozzi's two-out single to right. The next batter, Tyler York, reached base on an error by Vikings' shortstop Casey Eddinger, allowing Kevin Cruz to come home from third for the second run of the inning.

Tallahassee collected another pair of hits in the third, resulting in a run. Chad Mabini singled, advanced to third on Clay Fenwick's double and came home on Matt Bahnick's sac-fly to left to push the Eagles' lead to 3-0.

Fenwick singled with one out in the fifth to start the Eagles' next run-scoring opportunity. After moving into scoring position on a passed ball by catcher Blake Swann, Bahnick brought him home again, this time on a double, to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.

After allowing only one hit through five innings, St. Johns River State picked up a pair against Deckert in the sixth and threatened to get back in the ball game, but the southpaw induced Swann into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to end the scoring threat.

The Vikings put the leadoff man on in each of the last three innings, but Stanley pitched his way out of potential trouble each time.

Abbatinozzi finished the scoring in the eighth when he singled home John Price, Jr., to cap a three-hit night.

Tallahassee will return to the field on Friday when it makes the short jaunt to Thomasville, Ga., for a doubleheader against the Thomas University JV. Game one begins at 3 p.m.
