Eagles complete sweep of Grand Rapids, improve to 22-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 5, 2013) - Tallahassee Community College completed a five-game sweep of Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College on Tuesday, defeating the Raiders by the scores of 17-3 and 6-4 at Eagle Field.

In the nightcap, Tallahassee rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to nail down its 12th straight victory and 22nd overall on the season (22-3).

With the game tied at 4-all, the Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an error by Grand Rapids first baseman Nick Jansen.

Victor Cole (4-0), who pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief of starter Robert Garcia, retired the side in the seventh to pick up the win. He and Garcia limited Grand Rapids to only four hits and combined for 11 strikeouts.

Clay Fenwick (2-for-4, R), Trent Higginbothem (2-for-2, 2 RBI) and John Price, Jr. (2-for-3, R) had two hits each in game two.

In the opener, the Eagles' bats were on full display in a 17-3 triumph.

Tallahassee had seven hits in its first at-bat and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. By the end of the third inning, the lead had grown to 14-3 and the Eagles' hit total was up to 15.

Tallahassee scored its final three runs in the fourth, the last coming on a passed ball that brought home James Abbatinozzi from third.

The Eagles' 16-hit attack was led by Price, Jr. (3-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI), Chad Mabini (3-for-3, 4 R) and Kevin Cruz (3-for-3, R, 4 RBI), who had three hits apiece.

Nick Deckert (3-0) went the distance for the five-inning victory. He allowed six hits and struck out six.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, Tallahassee learned it had moved to No. 3 in the latest FCSAA Baseball Coaches' Poll. The Eagles trail only Polk State College and Miami Dade College in this week's rankings.

Scheduling update

Tallahassee's originally-scheduled weekend opponent Dakota County (Minn.) Technical College pulled out of Friday and Saturday's games late last week. It took a few days, but the Eagles have filled the gap in the schedule.

Marion Military (Ala.) Institute will come to Eagle Field for games on Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.).
