Former Eagle Michael Saunders shines at World Baseball Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 14, 2013) – Former Tallahassee Community College baseball standout Michael Saunders participated in the 2013 World Baseball Classic and came away with the Most Valuable Player award from Pool D.

Playing for his native Canada, Saunders' teammates included former American League MVP Justin Morneau (Minnesota Twins) and former National League MVP Joey Votto (Cincinnati Reds). Yet, it was Saunders, a starting outfielder for the Seattle Mariners, who put together one of the most impressive three-game runs in the history of the WBC.

Despite his team not advancing out of pool play, Saunders won the MVP award after batting .727 (8-for-11) with three doubles, a homer, seven RBI and four runs scored in three games.

"He had a heck of a series," said Mariners manager Eric Wedge. "He was swinging the bat here well for us before he went there. He was looking forward to playing for his county. Obviously, he did a fantastic job for them."

Saunders also delivered in clutch situations for Canada, including a two-run homer in Sunday's 9-4 loss to the United States.

"It's definitely an honor," Saunders said after receiving the MVP trophy from former Major League manager Tony LaRussa and players union representative Tony Clark. "However, it's kind of a sour taste in my mouth right now. Whenever you represent your country, it really doesn't matter how you do, as long as you win."

Canada split its first two games – losing to Italy, 14-4, and beating Mexico, 10-3 – setting up an elimination game against the USA in the pool D finale. Despite the loss, Saunders, who previously represented Canada in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, soaked in every moment of his first WBC.

"Unbelievable experience," Saunders said. "I'm so happy I was able to be a part of that. It was tough leaving the boys and not moving on. But I was excited to get back and start getting ready for the season."

Saunders played for coach Mike McLeod's Eagles in 2005.
