TCC’s Torres gets his shot with the San Diego Padres

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 28, 2013) – When Tallahassee Community College's Anthony Torres didn't hear his name called during Major League Baseball's 2013 First-year Player Draft, it appeared the All-Panhandle Conference shortstop would fulfill his commitment to St. Thomas University. 

Five days after the draft ended, however, Torres' plans changed when the San Diego Padres signed him to a free agent contract. 

Following a quick cross-country trip, Torres made a brief stop in Arizona for a physical exam then reported to Eugene, Ore., where he joined the Eugene Emeralds, San Diego's Class A Short-Season affiliate. 

"We're real happy for Anthony, it's been his lifelong dream to play professional baseball," said Tallahassee head coach Mike McLeod. "We're grateful to the (San Diego) Padres for giving him the chance. He was a great player and person for us during his two years and we're excited for him." 

Torres' opportunity to pursue a professional career comes on the heels of a sensational sophomore season with Tallahassee. The Naguabo, Puerto Rico, native batted .327 with two home runs, 29 RBI and 29 stolen bases, numbers that earned him a spot on the first-team All-PC squad.  

Taking the field at second base, Torres made his professional debut June 20 against the Tri-City Dust Devils. After going hitless in his first two games, Torres enjoyed a 3-for-3 outing in game three against Tri-City and is currently on an 8-for-13 tear over his last four games. 

Through six total games, Torres is batting .421 (8-for-19) with two runs scored and one RBI.
