Opening Statement: Cole, offense dominates CVCC in 11-0 win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 28, 2014) – NJCAA No. 16/FCSAA No. 4 Tallahassee Community College (15-5) opened a three-game series against NJCAA No. 5 Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College with an emphatic 11-0 win on Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.

Victor Cole (3-0) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before settling for a two-hit shutout, and Matt Olive and Johnny Blue Craig highlighted the Eagles' 10-hit attack with their first career home runs.

Last weekend, Tallahassee suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of NJCAA No. 4 State College of Florida, including two extra-inning games. The schedule provided Tallahassee with a shot at redemption against Chattahoochee Valley, one of Region 22's most consistent teams over the last decade. The Pirates' lofty national ranking was accompanied by a 14-1 record that included a win over Panhandle Conference rival Gulf Coast State College.

One week ago, Cole pitched well but came up with a no-decision in the series opener against State College of Florida. The sophomore lefty was not about to be denied today.

Cole walked five but didn't allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth when Grayson Ivey broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out double.

Meanwhile, the Eagles' roughed up Pirates starter Dalton Rentz, tagging him for eight runs over four innings.

Tallahassee put five runs on the board in the second. Olive's sac-fly to right-center brought home D.J. McKnight with the first run of the game. The big hit in the inning was delivered by Geremy Walton, who tripled to deep right-center, scoring Christian Dicks and Cole Johnson.

The Eagles padded their lead in the fourth on two swings of the bat. The first was by Olive, whose solo homer sailed over the left field fence. Three batters later, Craig followed suit, taking Rentz' first pitch out of the park to give Tallahassee an 8-0 lead.

The game turned into a seven-inning affair after the Eagles put more runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings.

Quincy Nieporte's two-run single in the fifth scored Bobby Rice and McKnight. An inning later, McKnight picked up an RBI on a sac-fly that scored Craig.

Craig went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Olive was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Walton was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Ryne Willard also added two hits.

Game two of the weekend series is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
