Alling, Herbert pitch Tallahassee past Thomas JV in DH sweep

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 9, 2014) – NJCAA No. 16/FCSAA No. 2 Tallahassee Community College ran its winning streak to 12 games with consecutive 9-0 wins against Thomas University's JV squad on Sunday afternoon.

All but one of the Eagles' 24 wins has come during a pair of double-digit winning streaks. Tallahassee opened the season 11-0 then dropped five of its next six games but has since strung together 12 straight victories.

Pitching was the story on Sunday as sophomore lefty Cody Alling and freshman right-hander Shaun Herbert notched complete-game victories.

In the opener, Alling tossed a one-hitter in the 9-0 victory – Tallahassee's second one-hit game in seven days. Alling combined with Will Thompson to one-hit Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College on March 3.

The Eagles gave Alling all the run support he would need, scoring three runs in the first. Tallahassee doubled its lead a couple innings later.

Up 3-0, three consecutive one-out doubles by Bobby Rice, D.J. McKnight and Quincy Nieporte accounted for two runs. Nieporte later scored on Dillon Jayne's two-out single to make the score 6-0.

The Eagles finished the scoring with two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Alling allowed his only hit in the fourth, a one-out single to Josue Martinez. He only issued one walk and struck out six, needing only 74 pitches for the complete-game victory.

Geremy Walton was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, McKnight was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI and Nieporte was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two driven in.

In game two, Herbert was equally impressive in the 9-0 win. He allowed only three hits, walked none and struck out seven.

Tallahassee broke a scoreless tie in the third with three runs. Jonathan Burkett scored the first one when Cody Borup drew a bases-loaded walk. Nieporte later singled home Johnny Blue Craig and Rice for a 3-0 lead.

After scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Eagles put the game away with four runs in the sixth.

Nieporte was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Borup was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Tallahassee will play its final non-conference home games on Monday when it hosts the Brewton-Parker College JV squad for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
