Indians take second straight from Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 21, 2014) – After being no-hit for five innings, Chipola College put four runs on the board in the sixth and defeated Tallahassee Community College, 5-1, on Friday afternoon in game two of the teams' Panhandle Conference series.

FCSAA No. 1/NJCAA No. 4 Tallahassee (30-8) has dropped the first two games of the series to its arch-rival and is now 2-3 in PC play. FCSAA No. 2/NJCAA No. 8 Chipola (25-6, 4-1) has won four straight after dropping its conference opener.

Tallahassee starter Victor Cole (5-1) took a no-hitter to the sixth but hit leadoff batter Kyle Moore. The next batter, leadoff hitter Cody Lanford, bunted his way on for the Indians' first hit. Kevin Santa followed with a bunt attempt and reached safely when Quincy Nieporte's throw sailed high at first.

With the bases loaded, Danny Mars' sac-fly scored Moore to break the scoreless tie. Later in the inning, an error by second baseman Cole Johnson was sandwiched around run-scoring singles from Ian Rice and Bert Givens, the latter of which ended Cole's afternoon after 5.2 innings.

Collin Strall, who relieved Cole and pitched 2.2 innings, inherited a bases-loaded situation and walked Jason Sierra to score the Indians' fourth run of the inning.

Tallahassee outhit Chipola, 9-8, and had base runners in all but two innings, but couldn't break through against Indian starter and winning pitcher Taylor Lewis until down 5-0 in the ninth.

Christian Dicks' single scored Nieporte, who led off the ninth with a double.

Dicks and Nieporte both went 2-for-4.

Lewis picked up the win and struck out ten batters.

Tallahassee will try to avoid the sweep when the teams return to Marianna for game three at 2 p.m. eastern Saturday.
