Eagles drop series opener at Gulf Coast State

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (April 4, 2014) – Playing for the first time in eight days, FCSAA No. 5/NJCAA No. 12 Tallahassee Community College dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 2/No. 16 Gulf Coast State College in game one of a three-game set between the Panhandle Conference rivals.

As the PC schedule hits the halfway point, Gulf Coast State sits atop the league standings at 8-2, alongside Chipola College (8-2) who scored a 6-5 win over Northwest Florida State College on Friday. The Northwest Florida State (4-6) loss allowed Tallahassee (5-5) to maintain a one-game lead on the Raiders for the all-important third place position in the league standings.

While the top two teams in the league standings will automatically qualify for the FCSAA Baseball Tournament, the third place team will meet the third-place representative from the Mid-Florida Conference in a one-game playoff for a berth in the postseason.

West Covington gave up one run over six innings to notch the win for Gulf Coast State (31-8).

Victor Cole was saddled with the loss for Tallahassee (33-10).

Now three games back of both Gulf Coast State and Chipola, the Eagles face a crucial game two against the Commodores, this one at Eagle Field, at 2 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting.
