TCC Baseball’s Matt Schaeffer signs with App State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (August 3, 2015) – Tallahassee Community College baseball standout Matt Schaeffer has signed a national letter of intent with Appalachian State University.

Schaeffer, a native of Port St. Lucie, Fla., has played his first two seasons of college baseball in Tallahassee.

As a freshman, he suited up for the Florida A&M Rattlers and appeared in 16 games. He transferred to TCC following the 2014 season and developed into one of the Eagles' top arms as a sophomore.

"Coach (Mike) McLeod gave me the opportunity to come to TCC as part of an already respected baseball program. But I also had the chance to grow as a player, competitor and human being," said Schaeffer. "Playing in the Panhandle Conference, arguably the best junior college conference in the nation, definitely allowed me to test my abilities against some of the top players in and around the state. I matured as an individual and a pitcher, which allowed me to hone my craft. The entire opportunity (at TCC) was special."

Schaeffer pitched in 20 games during the 2015 season, compiling a 4-1 record with six saves and a 3.82 ERA in 37.2 innings pitched.

As for his next step, Schaeffer feels like he has found the perfect fit.

"Appalachian State presented me with a great opportunity to not only become a piece of a baseball program that has the brightest of futures but one that allows me to finish my degree (in graphic design) at a highly-respected institution," Schaeffer added.

"From the facilities to the coaches, I truly believe App State provides me with the best opportunity to continue my growth as a student-athlete. I'm very excited about what's in store, and I'm ready to get to work."

Academically, Schaeffer was an honor roll student at TCC, earned a spot on the NJCAA's Academic Student-Athlete Awards list and graduated with honors from TCC in May.

App State, located in Boone, N.C., is an NCAA Division I school who will join the Sun Belt Conference in 2016 after previously being a member of the Southern Conference.
