#TCCBaseball: Chatt Valley rallies to take series opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 24, 2017) – NJCAA No. 6 Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College rallied for a 9-6 win over Tallahassee Community College on Friday evening in game one of a three-game weekend series.

The Pirates have won 12 straight games since dropping their season opener while Tallahassee (7-10) has dropped five in a row for the second time this season.

Chatt Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Tallahassee starter Brooks Buckler, but the Eagles rallied in the bottom of the second.

Tallahassee scored four runs in the inning without the benefit of a single hit.

Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases then Pirates pitcher Chandler Newman uncorked a wild pitch to score Deyvid Silva. Newman's second hit batsman of the inning re-loaded the bases for Jack Hartman, who drew a walk to plate Tucker Rayburn

Following a pitching change, a fielder's choice brought home Chris Clark with the tying run. The next batter, Josh Nothdorft, grounded out to third to score Aaron Haughton and put Tallahassee in front, 4-3.

Nothdorft's fourth-inning single scored Haughton to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-3.

Chatt Valley tied the game in the top of the six, aided by a Tanner Thomas' dropped fly ball in left field, which scored the first of the inning, but Tallahassee shook off the miscue and answered right back in the bottom half.

With two outs, Jordan Curtis beat out an infield single, allowing Hartman to score from third and put the Eagles back in front, 6-5.

Buckler, who allowed five hits and five runs (three earned) through six innings, handed things off to the bullpen to begin the seventh, but Alex Stobert faced only four batters. By the time he was relieved by Malik Barrington, Chatt Valley had regained a 7-6 lead.

With two outs in the inning, Jaylen Smith doubled off Barrington to score John Foster and give the Pirates an 8-6 lead.

Chatt Valley added an insurance run in the eighth.

Stobert took the loss for Tallahassee.

Hartman went 2-for-2 and reached base four times total. He scored a run and drove in one. Nothdorft was 1-for-5 with two RBIs.

Game two of the series between Tallahassee and Chatt Valley is at 2 p.m. Saturday.
