#TCCBaseball wins in extras, advances to Lakeland

PALATKA, Fla. (April 27, 2017) – Tallahassee Community College knocked off Daytona State College, 10-8 in 10 innings, on Thursday to claim one of two Wild Card berths into next week's NJCAA District/FCSAA State Baseball Tournament in Lakeland, Fla.

The Eagles (28-23) rallied from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth and were poised to take the lead in the ninth. With a runner on second and one out, Deyvid Silva singled to center but Cole Vann stumbled halfway between third and home and was tagged out in a rundown, eventually sending the game to extra innings.

Tallahassee went right back to work in the tenth, loading the bases with one out when it caught a break from the Falcons' defense. Centerfielder Alex Hendricks dropped a shallow fly ball off the bat of Tanner Thomas, allowing Aaron Haughton to score from third with the go-ahead run.

One batter later, Vann redeemed himself with one swing of the bat, drilling a grand slam over the left field fence that gave the Eagles a 10-5 lead and provided what proved to be the winning runs.

Daytona State made things interesting in its half of the tenth, scoring three times before Jake Hunkiar came on to record the final out and pick up the save.

Derick Garcia (6-1), who came on in the fourth when the Falcons scored four runs to erase Tallahassee's 3-1 lead, pitched 6.1 innings to earn the victory.

Tallahassee will continue postseason play at 1 p.m., Friday, May 5 against State College of Florida.

All games will be played at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.
