TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 23, 2019) – Tallahassee Community College's baseball team split a doubleheader with Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College on Saturday at Eagle Field.
Tallahassee won game one, 4-3, but dropped the second game, 7-2, in the rubber game of the teams' three-game series.
In the opener, the Eagles broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the fourth.
The inning started with consecutive doubles by Jeff Athey and Chase Forester. The Eagles scored the final two runs with two outs.
Chatt Valley pitcher Evan Baber uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Forester from third, and Taylor Lomack beat out an infield single to plate Josh Bedell-Murray with what proved to be the winning run.
Staked to a three-run lead, Tallahassee starter Javier Baldor went back out for the fifth before running into one-out trouble. A walk, error and wild pitch brought the tying run to the plate, and head coach Mike McLeod elected to go to Logan Lacey.
Lacey got out of the inning but not before the Pirates scored twice to pull within a run. He allowed only two hits over the final two innings to record his second save and preserve the win for Baldor, who improved to 2-0.
Ridge Abinsay had two of the Eagles' six hits.
In game two, Chattahoochee Valley clinched the series win with a 7-2 victory.
The Pirates got to Tallahassee starter Andrew Shivak (1-3) for two runs in the first and never trailed. It was 4-0 before the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the third.
Tallahassee had two runs in and the tying runs on base with nobody out but hit into a double play to stem the momentum. Athey struck out to end the inning and keep Chatt Valley's lead at two.
The Pirates got the runs back in the fourth, including a solo home run by Jason Rooks, his fourth in five games against the Eagles the last two seasons, and tacked on a final run in the fifth.
Tallahassee was limited to just three hits. Two came off the bat of Lomack, who was 2-for-2.
Tallahassee will return to play on Wednesday when it hosts Florida State College at Jacksonville. Firs pitch is at 4 p.m.
