One for the record books: Eagles survive Gordon State in OT

BARNESVILLE, Ga. (November 6, 2014) – FCSAA No. 4 Tallahassee Community College outscored Gordon (Ga.) State College in overtime, 12-8, and escaped the Highlanders' upset bid with an 86-82 victory.

With the win, Tallahassee improved to 3-0 on the young season. It was also head coach Eddie Barnes' 259th win with the Eagles, moving him past Mike Gillespie (258) as the winningest coach in school history.

Barnes and the Eagles needed every last second to stave off the Highlanders' upset bid in front of a raucous home crowd.

Trailing 80-79, freshman guard Jahvaughn Powell (Tallahassee Lincoln HS) nailed a go-ahead three-pointer to give the Eagles an 82-80 lead with 40 seconds remaining. Then, after hitting just 10-of-24 free throws, Tallahassee sealed the victory at the charity stripe.

Dirk Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the Eagles' lead to four (84-80). After Gordon State cut the lead in half with a basket, Williams stepped back to the line and hit two more free throws for the game's final points.

Williams (4) and Powell (6) combined to score ten of the Eagles' 12 points in overtime and finished the game with 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Elmo Stephen and Eric Nottage shared team-high honors with 16 points each. Norbertas Giga added ten.

Early on, Tallahassee looked to be in control and led by as many as 12 points (29-17) following Nottage's three-pointer at the 5:37 mark of the first half, but Gordon State made a run and closed the Eagles' lead to 33-30 at the intermission.

A back-and-forth affair ensued after the break, as the lead changed hands 11 times. Tallahassee had the final shot in regulation but Powell's potential game-winning three-pointer rimmed out.

With three road victories under its belt, Tallahassee will take a day off then host St. Petersburg College in its home opener at 6 p.m. Saturday. Tallahassee and St. Petersburg's women will start the afternoon's action at 4 p.m.

General admission is $5 for adults. TCC students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with a valid TCC ID.
