TCC takes two of three at JUCO Kickoff Tournament

CLEARWATER, Fla. (January 25, 2013) - Freshman pitcher Ashley Dobson picked up two wins, including one against nationally-ranked State College of Florida, to lead FCSAA No. 2 Tallahassee Community College to victories in two of three games on the opening day of the JUCO Kickoff Tournament.

Dobson, one of 13 players making their collegiate debut, picked up her second win against Palm Beach State College in the Eagles' third game of the day. However, it was her performance against the Manatees in the opener that stole the show on Friday.

State College of Florida, the defending FCSAA Gulf District Champions, brought the state's No. 1 ranking and a No. 4 NJCAA ranking into the game, as well as all-America pitcher Paige Matthews.

Dobson was more than up to the task. She took a perfect game into fifth and ended up with a two-hitter and struck out nine in Tallahassee's 3-1 victory. Her lone run allowed was unearned.

Bianca Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Ashley Heath-Smith was 2-for-2 and scored a run.

Following the win over State College of Florida, Tallahassee hit the field again, but came up short in a 6-2 loss to St. Petersburg College.

Sophomore transfer Brittany Wright took the loss, giving up five runs in just 1.3 innings. Freshman Krysta Hoani entered in relief and yielded just one run the rest of the way.

Gutierrez and Heath-Smith again led Tallahassee, offensively, with an RBI each.

Tallahassee's "rubber game" on opening day turned into a 13-3, five-inning win over Palm Beach State College.

The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first, courtesy of Alexis Huss' three-run homer, but Palm Beach State tied the game in its first at-bat with three runs against Wright.

Enter Dobson, who held the Panthers hitless the rest of the way

Meanwhile, the Tallahassee bats continued to be red hot. Brenda Santana smacked a grand slam in the top of the fifth to finish the scoring.

Gutierrez was 2-for-3 and scored twice while Marina Cobbs was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Tallahassee (2-1) will resume play in the JUCO Kickoff Tournament on Saturday with games against South Georgia College (9 a.m.) and Illinois Central College (11 a.m.)
