TCC Softball swings into 2013 season at JUCO Kickoff Tournament

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (January 24, 2013) - Tallahassee Community College's softball team will open the 2013 season by playing five games over two days at the annual JUCO Kickoff Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.

In Friday's season opener, scheduled for a noon first pitch, FCSAA No. 2 Tallahassee will take on top-ranked State College of Florida in a highly-anticipated 1 vs. 2 showdown.

The FCSAA released its preseason coaches' poll on Thursday - State College of Florida received 11 of 18 first-place votes and 167 total points in voting. Tallahassee received one first-place vote and 120 points, one point more than No. 3 Florida State College at Jacksonville and two more than No. 4 Indian River State College, both of whom are on the Eagles' schedule at next weekend's Triple Crown College Classic.

At No. 4, State College of Florida also led a trio of teams from Florida in the NJCAA's first poll of the season, also released on Thursday. Florida State College at Jacksonville is ranked fifth while Indian River State is ranked No. 19.

Tallahassee (2011) and State College of Florida (2012) are the two most recent champions of the FCSAA's Gulf District Tournament, and both are expected to vie for the title, and the accompanying berth to the national tournament, in 2013.

Tallahassee's roster is full of fresh faces following the departure of ten sophomores in 2012, nine of whom carried the Eagles to a third-place national finish as freshmen the year before.

Lynn University signee Cherise McEnery, who'll see action at the corner infield positions and as the designated player, is one of only three returning players - outfielder Bianca Gutierrez and catcher Kelly Engwall are the others - from last season. Ohlone College transfer Brittany Wright will see immediate action in the pitching rotation.

Meanwhile, State College of Florida returns nine sophomores, including first-team all-American and reigning FCSAA Pitcher of the Year Paige Matthews, who is expected to be in the circle against the Eagles on Friday.

Following the game against State College of Florida, Tallahassee will turn around and face FCSAA No. 10 St. Petersburg College at 2 p.m. and Palm Beach State College at 6:20 p.m.

On Saturday, the Eagles will play South Georgia College at 9 a.m. and Illinois Central College at 11 a.m.
