Eagles win nightcap, salvage split with ABAC

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 15, 2013) - Tallahassee Community College picked up an 8-0, five-inning victory in game two against Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) Agricultural College on Friday evening to salvage a doubleheader split in the Eagles' 2013 home opener at the TCC Softball Complex.
After dropping game one, 7-4 in nine innings, Tallahassee (6-8) answered in emphatic fashion against the Fillies (8-7) in the nightcap.
Krysta Hoani (1-3) went the distance to pick up her first collegiate victory. The New Zealander allowed only three hits and walked two while striking out seven.
Tallahassee jumped on ABAC starter Morgan Bell for two runs in the first and two more in the second to grab a quick 4-0 lead.
Kacey Mattos drove in the Eagles' next two runs – a solo home run in the third and a run-scoring single in the fifth – to push the lead to 6-0.
After Dominique Davis' bunt single plated the second run of the fifth inning, Mattos scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Eagles the 8-0 victory.
Five players had two hits each as Tallahassee racked up 13 hits in game two.
Mattos was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Marina Cobbs, Ashley Heath-Smith, Brianna Murillo and Krista Garcia also had two hits.
In the opener, Tallahassee was one out from a victory before a defensive miscue opened the door for ABAC.
Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Tallahassee starter Ashley Dobson (5-4) fielded a slow roller back to the circle, but her throw to first sailed over the head of Alexis Huss. The error gave ABAC new life, and the Fillies wasted no time taking advantage.
One batter later, a single to left brought home the tying run from third and sent the game to extra innings.
With the international tie breaker in effect, both teams put two runs on the board in the eighth.
ABAC went to work again in the ninth, scoring three runs that proved to be the difference in the game one victory.
Dobson, who carried a perfect game into the fourth, went the distance but took the game one loss for Tallahassee.
Cobbs was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in one.
Tallahassee will return to play on Tuesday when it hosts Santa Fe College for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
