Rivera, Eagles down Palm Beach State at Triple Crown College Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (February 9, 2014) - Tallahassee Community College returned to the softball diamond on Sunday and won one of its three games at the prestigious Triple Crown College Classic.

Tallahassee (3-2) played games against a trio of schools from the Southern Conference, beginning with a 7-2 win over Palm Beach State College. In game two, the Eagles fell to NJCAA No. 2/FCSAA No. 2 Indian River State College, 9-1. Tallahassee closed the day with a 3-1 loss to Miami Dade College.

Like many schools in the Sunshine State, Tallahassee's schedule has been decimated by rain over the first ten days of the 2014 season. While some schools have played upwards of a dozen games to date, two of the Eagles' biggest events - the JUCO Kickoff Tournament and Triple Crown College Classic - have been reduced to one-day affairs and a total of five games, rather than the scheduled ten.

Against Palm Beach State, Tallahassee broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth on Dominique Davis' sac-fly that scored Shelby Manns with what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Eagles blew the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs highlighted by Te Reo Powhiri Matautia's two-run homer.

Tallahassee tallied 11 hits against Palm Beach State led by Ashley Heath-Smith (2-for-3, RBI), Manns (2-for-4) and Mariah Rivera (2-for-2, R).

Rivera (2-0) also got it done in the circle for the Eagles, pitching a complete game to notch her second win of the season.

Against Indian River State, Tallahassee watched as the Pioneers scored the final eight runs of the game in the 9-1 win.

After falling behind 1-0, Tallahassee tied the game in the second on Alexis Huss' solo shot. She went 2-for-3 in the game.

Krysta Hoani (0-1) took the loss for Tallahassee.

In the final game of the day, Tallahassee outhit Miami Dade, 10-9, but came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision.

Huss' second solo homer of the day accounted for the Eagles' lone run.

Matautia went 4-for-4 to lead the Eagles' offensive attack. Danielle Patterson and Brianna Murillo also had multi-hit games for Tallahassee.

Rivera (2-1) pitched her second complete game of the day but took the loss for the Eagles.

Tallahassee travels to Santa Fe College on Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
