TCC Softball splits DH at Santa Fe
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (February 16, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College (5-4) split a doubleheader at Santa Fe College on Sunday, defeating the Saints in game one, 2-1, then falling in game two by a 3-1 score.
In the opener, Ashley Dobson followed up Saturday's near no-hitter with another strong outing in the Eagles' 2-1, game one victory.
Dobson went the distance, allowing only four hits and a sixth inning run that momentarily tied the game. She struck out three and walked only one.
With the game tied at 1-all, Ashley Heath-Smith led off the top of the seventh with a single. She advanced to second on a perfectly executed sac bunt by Dominique Davis then, two batters later, came home on Te Reo Powhiri Matautia's two-out single.
Matautia was also responsible for the Eagles' first run of the day, drawing a bases-loaded walk to score Davis in the top of the third.
Danielle Patterson went 2-for-3 in the opener.
In game two, Mariah Rivera gave the Eagles another strong effort in the circle, but it wasn't enough as Santa Fe earned the split with a 3-1 victory.
Rivera scattered six hits over six innings and struck out four. Only one of her three runs allowed was earned.
After spotting the Saints a first-inning run, Tallahassee tied things up in the second when Brenda Santana scored on a groundout to short by Heath-Smith.
The game remained tied at 1-all until the fourth when Santa Fe scored a pair of unearned runs – both with two outs.
Brianna Murillo was 2-for-3 and the only Eagle with more than one hit in the nightcap.
Tallahassee and Santa Fe will complete the home-and-home series on Tuesday when the teams meet at the TCC Softball Complex for the Eagles' home opener. Game one will begin at 4 p.m.
