Eagles swept by Pensacola State in conference opener

PENSACOLA, Fla. (March 18, 2015) – The Tallahassee Community College softball team was swept by Pensacola State College in its opening series of Panhandle Conference play on Wednesday evening. 

The Pirates won game one in dramatic fashion, 4-3, then followed it with a 5-2 victory in game two. 

The NJCAA No. 6/FCSAA No. 4 Eagles fell to 18-8 for the season and 0-2 in conference play. 

Game one was a back-and-forth affair.  The Pirates struck first scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.  

The Eagles came right back in the top of the second to tie the game at 2-2. 

After both teams scored a run in the fifth inning to keep the game tied (3-3), the Pirates were able to score the winning run in the seventh with a walk-off single from Rebecca Calloway. 

Danielle Patterson went 2-for-3 and recorded an RBI for Tallahassee. 

Mariah Rivera got the start for the Eagles and gave up five hits in the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season. 

In game two, the Eagles struggled to get anything going offensive while Pensacola State jumped out to a 5-0 lead with runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. 

Tallahassee was only able to muster two runs on nine hits with both runs coming in the seventh inning. 

Kayla Boucher went 2-for-3 and scored once. 

Alexandra Cook got the start in the circle for game two and pitched 3.1 innings and gave up four runs. She was tagged with her first loss of the season, falling to 7-1. 

Gabrielle Decker entered the game in relief and pitched the game's final 2.2 innings, giving up one run. 

Tallahassee will return to action on Saturday, March 21 when it hosts conference opponent Gulf Coast State College in a doubleheader.  The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
