Eagle women knock off nationally-ranked Walters State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 27, 2014) – FCSAA No. 3 Tallahassee Community College got its biggest win of the season on Thursday, knocking off NJCAA No. 13 Walters State (Tenn.) Community College 46-28 during the final day of the Capital Courtyard Classic.

Tallahassee finished the Classic a perfect 3-0 to improve to 9-1 on the season. Walters  State dropped its final two games of the week and sits at 9-2.

Cat Wells scored 14 points for Tallahassee, the only player on either side to score in double-figures.

Points were hard to come by from the outset, particularly for the visiting Senators, who needed a shot at the first half buzzer to reach double-digits and shot 3-of-28 (10.7 percent) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes.

Tallahassee also had a slow start offensively but finally showed signs of life midway through the first half. A 14-0 run covering more than nine minutes gave the Eagles a 24-7 lead heading into the final 30 seconds of the first half.

Walters State's Arjae Saunders hit a runner at the buzzer to cut Tallahassee's lead to 24-9. It also ended a 13-minute drought without a field goal for the Senators.

Walters State pulled within eight (26-18) on D'Toria Fowler's basket at the 15:09 mark, but the Eagles put the game away with a 14-4 run, capped by a pair of free throws from Wells with 6:18 left.

Tallahassee will return to action on Wednesday, December 3 with a trip to the College of Central Florida.

Tallahassee Community College would like to thank the Leon County Tourist Development Council, the Capital Courtyard by Marriott and Chick-fil-A West Tennessee Street for their support of the Capital Courtyard Classic.
