Eagle women head to the ATL for season opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 30, 2015) – Tallahassee Community College's women's basketball team is heading north to open its 2015-16 season with a pair of games at the Atlanta Metro State College Classic.

The Eagles will play Baltimore City Community College at 5:30 p.m. Friday in their season opener. The second game of the weekend tips at 4 p.m. Saturday against host Atlanta Metro State.

Tallahassee, ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA Region 8 Women's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll, is coming off a 20-win campaign a year ago but one that ended with a 73-67 loss to Gulf Coast State College in a Panhandle Conference playoff game.

Just one player – sophomore guard Eboni Watts – returns from last year's squad. Watts, a native of Macon, Ga., averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 31 games as a freshman. Third-year head coach Franqua "Q" Bedell will be counting on her for more than statistics this season.

Among the Eagles making their college debut on Friday is guard Lawriell Wilson. Wilson, a native of Kenner, La., missed all of the 2014-15 season while rehabbing a knee injury she suffered in the 2014 Louisiana State Championship Game at Warren Easton Charter High School. She was ranked the number four prospect by the Times-Picayune in the class of 2014.

Wilson is joined by former high school teammate, forward Sabrina Banks. A year after falling in the state championship game, Banks led Warren Easton to the title in 2015, marking the first state championship by an Orleans Parish public school.

Friday's game with Baltimore City will mark the Eagles' first-ever meeting with the NJCAA Region XX opponent. Tallahassee owns a 6-1 all-time record vs. Atlanta Metro State, but this will be the teams' first meeting since 2003.
