Stepping Stones: Lawriell Wilson, Central Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (August 2, 2017) – Tallahassee Community College women’s basketball standout Lawriell Wilson has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Central Florida. 

Wilson had offers from across the country before narrowing the contenders down to UCF and Rutgers. 

The Kenner, La., native arrived on the Tallahassee campus in 2014 but sat out the 2014-15 season to fully rehab a devastating knee injury suffered in Louisiana’s 2014 Class 4A state championship game. Once Wilson returned to the playing floor a year later, she proceeded to rewrite the Eagles’ record books. 

In two seasons (2015-17) playing for head coach Franqua “Q” Bedell, Wilson finished as the Eagles’ all-time leading scorer with 1,127 points. She also set the school’s single-season record with 678 points in 2016-17 and tied Tallahassee’s single-game mark with 39 points against Palm Beach State College in the quarterfinals of the 2017 NJCAA District/FCSAA State Tournament. 

Her 2016-17 season was, arguably, the best statistical season in school history.  

Wilson was the NJCAA's No. 3 leading scorer at 21.9 points per game, and averaged 6.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists, leading Tallahassee to a 23-8 record, No. 9 national ranking and its first appearance in the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship since 2001. 

Along the way, she was named Panhandle Conference Player of the Year by both the league coaches and media and became the first Tallahassee player to earn FCSAA State Player of the Year honors. Those awards also garnered her first-team All-PC and FCSAA All-State recognition.  

Following the season, Wilson was named a first-team All-American by both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and National Junior College Athletic Association, the highest individual honors awarded to a women’s basketball player in school history. 

Central Florida, located in Orlando, Fla., competes in the American Athletic Conference.
