Chipola takes series opener with #TCCBaseball

MARIANNA, Fla. (March 18, 2016) – Chipola College scored four runs in the first inning and put the game away with five in the sixth en route to a 13-4 win over Tallahassee Community College in game one of the teams' Panhandle Conference series.

Leading 11-4, Chipola tacked on two runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via the run rule.

Chipola (24-9) is now 3-1 in PC play, one game ahead of Tallahassee (28-8, 2-2) and Gulf Coast State College (2-2).

Both teams got on the board in the first, courtesy of the long ball.

Kyle Cavanaugh's two-out, solo homer put the Eagles in front, 1-0. Chipola's answer did far more damage.

Reese Cooley smacked a grand slam to give Chipola a 4-1 lead. The next batter, Tyler Osik, singled to knock out Tallahassee starter Craig Olson after just six batters.

Tallahassee got two of the runs back in the second to pull within a run. Manny Chavarria singled home Deyvid Silva, and Myrone Mebane scrored from third on Bret Maxwell's RBI-groundout.

Meanwhile, pitcher Rion Murrah, who came on with one out in the first, kept the Eagles within striking distance. He allowed only two hits and two runs over his first 4.2 innings of work.

Trailing 6-3, Murrah ran into trouble in the sixth. After allowing two runs, he exited with two on and two outs, but the first batter Zach Chappell faced, Michael Hickman, homered on a 3-2 pitch to put the game away.

Myles Edwards hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via the run rule.

Offensively, Tallahassee was paced by Ethan Crout, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cavanaugh finished 1-for-4.

Olson (3-2) took the loss for Tallahassee, who will go for the series equalizer on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Eagle Field.
