Bio

Jose Fernandez, well-known and highly-respected in Tallahassee's vast running community, joins Gary Droze's staff as an assistant coach and will primarily work with the Eagles' jumpers and throwers.

Fernandez brings 27 years of successful coaching experience to the Eagles' track & field program, having coached at the club, middle school, high school and collegiate levels.

During his coaching career, Fernandez has qualified more than 100 athletes to the FHSAA State Championships in track & field. Of those, 78 placed in the top eight, including seven individual state champions and a state championship relay team. He has also produced numerous cross country teams and individual runners who placed in the top 10 at the FHSAA State Championships.

Fernandez describes his proudest moments as those in which his student-athletes earn academic and athletic aid in their quest for a college degree and the opportunity to compete at the next level.

Fernandez holds a B.S. in mathematics education from the University of Central Florida, a B.S.H. in nutrition from the University of North Florida, a MAT from Jacksonville University, a MSE in human performance from Jacksonville State University, and an Ed. S. in coaching pedagogy from Valdosta State University.  He also holds USATF Level II certifications in jumps, sprints, hurdles, relays, multi-events, and endurance, as well as USTFCCCA certifications in strength and conditioning and a specialist certification in throwing events.

Fernandez currently teaches mathematics at Godby High school.
