Callaway, Vann named TCC’s top scholar-athletes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 21, 2018) – Tallahassee Community College's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recognized its top scholar-athletes during its annual end-of-year athletic banquet.

Softball's Brandie Callaway and baseball's Cole Vann were named TCC Athletics' Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively.

Callaway, a sophomore from Glen St. Mary, Fla., was a mainstay in centerfield over the past two seasons for the Eagles. She appeared in 91 games and posted a batting average of .234 with three home runs and 34 RBIs.

Academically, Callaway made the President's List all four terms at TCC and graduated in May with an overall GPA of 3.94. Last month, she was named Google Cloud Academic All-District.

Callaway will pursue a degree in nursing at Florida Gateway College.

Vann, a sophomore from Colquitt, Ga., helped Tallahassee to back-to-back appearances in the FCSAA State Tournament. He was First-team FCSAA All-State as a designated hitter in 2018 after earning second-team honors as a freshman and was a two-time First-team All-Panhandle Conference selection. In 58 games as a sophomore, Vann batted .383 with seven home runs and 49 RBIs.

Like Callaway, he was named Google Cloud Academic All-District and received the Panhandle Conference's Buddy Kisner Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award. He graduated in May with a 3.84 GPA and will continue his academic and athletic careers at Georgia Southern University where he will pursue a biology degree.

Both Callaway and Vann were named all-academic by both the Panhandle Conference (PC) and Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) in 2017 and are on track to repeat those honors this year.

Other scholar-athlete of the year nominees were Bamba Jaye, men's basketball; Nakiah Black, women's basketball; Meagen Giddens, women's cross country; and Travis Parks, men's cross country.
