Eagle men take sole possession of No. 3 in FCSAA rankings; women drop to No. 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 6, 2013) – The Florida College System Activities Association’s (FCSAA) first regular season coaches’ polls are out and a strong opening weekend helped Tallahassee Community College’s men’s basketball team take a bit of step forward in the men’s poll.

After sharing the No. 3 spot with Northwest Florida State College in the preseason poll, Tallahassee is No. 3 all by itself in this week’s rankings, released on Tuesday.

Tallahassee opened its season with a 39-point victory over Lurleen B. Wallace (Ala.) Community College and a 20-point win over defending NJCAA Region 7 Champion Motlow State (Tenn.) Community College at the Quality Inn Classic, hosted by Northwest Florida State. The Raiders defeated the same two teams, although it bested Motlow State by 11 and escaped Lurleen B. Wallace with a three-point win.

Those results gave Tallahassee just enough of a bump to separate itself from its Panhandle Conference rival in the latest coaches’ poll.

The College of Central Florida and Chipola College remained 1-2 in the rankings, and Eastern Florida State College, Daytona State College and Pensacola State College stayed put at five through seven, respectively.

Last week’s No. 8, Gulf Coast State College, dropped to tenth while Polk State College and Santa Fe College moved up one spot to No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.

In the women’s rankings, Tallahassee slipped two spots to No. 7 after splitting a season-opening road trip.

The Eagles defeated then-No. 9 Hillsborough Community College, 72-61, in their season opener, the Tallahassee head coaching debut for Franqua “Q” Bedell. But a 65-50 loss to No. 4 St. Petersburg College opened the door for Pensacola State College to replace the Eagles at No. 5.

Palm Beach State College, who split two games, including a near-upset of No. 2 Gulf Coast State College, made the biggest move in the poll, jumping four spots to No. 6.

Chipola still leads the poll, which had no movement in the top four – Gulf Coast State, Northwest Florida State and St. Petersburg are ranked two through four, respectively.

Florida State College at Jacksonville leads a trio of Mid-Florida Conference teams ranked eighth through tenth. Santa Fe is No. 9 and Hillsborough is No. 10.
