Next Stop for TCC’s Deckert: Florida Gulf Coast University

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 24, 2013) – Nick Deckert only needed one visit to Florida Gulf Coast University to know it was the place for him.

After taking a trip to the Ft. Myers campus in mid-April, Deckert, who said he "fell in love with the school," promptly accepted the Eagles' scholarship offer and the Tallahassee Community College standout will join the program this fall.

"To go to Florida Gulf Coast is an opportunity I'm blessed to have," said Deckert. "My goal was to always play Division I baseball and I've prided myself on how hard I've worked to get there.

"(Florida Gulf Coast) is Division I (baseball) and they are a program on the rise."

Deckert, a native of Tallahassee, attended Leon High School, where he enjoyed a solid prep career. However, the southpaw garnered just a handful of college offers and eventually signed with Tallahassee, where he developed into the ace of the staff over his two years with the Eagles.

As good as Deckert was as a freshman, when he posted a 4-1 record and 3.89 ERA in ten games, he was even better as a sophomore and his efforts helped Tallahassee ascend to a No. 1 NJCAA ranking in late April and the 2013 Panhandle Conference Championship.

He went 9-1 with a 2.31 ERA and was a first-team All-Panhandle Conference selection. In his final appearance with Tallahassee, he earned the win against St. Johns River State College in the NJCCA Gulf District/FCSAA State Baseball Tournament.

In two seasons, Deckert was 13-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 25 games. In 119.2 innings pitched, he struck out 96 batters.

Florida Gulf Coast is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
