#TCCBaseball: Shelton State sweeps three from Eagles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 10, 2018) – Shelton (Ala.) State Community College completed a series sweep of Tallahassee Community College, defeating the Eagles, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.

Shelton State swept a doubleheader from Tallahassee on Friday, winning both games in extra innings. The Buccaneers won game one, 10-7 in ten innings and took game two, 3-1 in eight innings.

The Eagles never led on Saturday, falling behind 4-0 before getting on the board in the bottom of the second.

With runners on second and third, a two-out wild pitch plated Alex Mills for Tallahassee's first run of the game. Keith Lyle followed with an infield single to score Tanner Thomas and cut Shelton State's lead in half.

A two-out error in the third allowed Tucker Rayburn to race home from third, trimming the Eagles' deficit to just a run.

The teams traded runs in the fourth – Tallahassee trailed 5-4 after Lyle's solo homer to right field.

The score remained 5-4 into the eighth when Shelton State smacked a pair of home runs off reliever Derick Garcia to all but put the game away – Alan Smith hit a three-run shot and Tanner Snow smacked a solo homer to increase the Buccaneers' lead to 9-4.

Brandon Reitz started and took the loss for Tallahassee. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings.

Unlike Saturday, Tallahassee had leads in both ends of Friday's doubleheader.

In game one, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead and starter Alex Stobert exited after five complete innings with a 4-1 lead.

Shelton State tied the game in the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Five walks and a hit batsman resulted in a 4-4 game.

Tallahassee answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a 7-4 lead and had Shelton State down to its final out in the seventh but again couldn't hold the lead.

A two-out error not only scored a run but extended the inning and the Buccaneers tied the game one batter later on Brady Johnson's two-run single.

Shelton State broke the tie in the tenth with another three-run inning.

Logan Lacy went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs to lead Tallahassee at the plate.

In game two, Tallahassee starter Justin Sorokowski struck out 13 over seven innings but could only leave with a 1-1 tie and a no-decision.

Shelton State scored two runs in the top of the eighth for the decisive runs.

Tallahassee managed just five hits. Rayburn was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Tallahassee (5-6) will attempt to get back on the winning track when it travels to Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) Agricultural College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
