TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 23, 2018) – Jayson Sowden's RBI-double in the bottom of the eighth scored the go-ahead run and Tallahassee Community College went on defeat NJCAA No. 10 Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) Community College, 6-4, in game one of the teams' three-game series.
Tallahassee has won six straight to improve to 11-6. The loss was just the fourth in 14 games this season for Chattahoochee Valley (10-4).
Trailing 4-2, Chattahoochee Valley tied the game in the seventh, with some help from the Eagles' defense. Following a leadoff single by Isaac Phillips, back-to-back errors plated a run and set up the Pirates for a big inning.
Tallahassee head coach Mike McLeod summoned Jake Kinney, the Eagles' fourth pitcher of the game, and although Chatt Valley eventually tied the game, Kinney retired all three batters he faced in the inning to minimize the damage.
With the game tied at 4-all, Tucker Rayburn led off the Tallahassee eighth with a single and advanced to third when Luke Ard perfectly executed a hit-and-run. Following a strikeout of Taylor Lomack for the second out of the inning, Sowden took one the opposite way to the left-centerfield gap, scoring Rayburn with the go-ahead run.
A balk by Chase Patrick (3-2) brought Ard home from third with an insurance run.
Still, Chatt Valley threatened in the ninth. Back-to-back singles after two were out brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but Kinney struck out Jack Copley to end the game.
Kinney (2-0) struck out five in 3.0 innings of work, and the Eagles recorded 11 strikeouts as a team – the 7th time they've recorded double-digit strikeouts this season.
Chatt Valley drew first blood in the fourth. Back-to-back solo homers by Jason Rooks and Copley put the Pirates in front 2-0, but the lead was short-lived.
Tanner Thomas led off the bottom half with a solo homer of his own, and the Eagles added two more runs in the inning to forge ahead. Rayburn doubled home a run and Cameron Wright's sac-fly brought home Logan to put Tallahassee ahead 3-2.
Ard's RBI-groundout in the sixth extended the Eagles' lead to 4-2.
Ard was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in.
Rayburn was 3-for-4 and scored twice. Sowden was 2-for-5.
The same two teams will play at 2 p.m. Saturday.
