TCC’s Richard Peters heads north to Albany (with audio)

Richard Peters talks about his decision to sign with Albany

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 17, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College men's basketball standout Richard Peters has signed a national letter of intent with the University at Albany Great Danes.

Playing in Albany, N.Y., Peters will suit up a mere six hours from his hometown of Pickering, Ontario, Canada, a northeast suburb of Toronto.

Peters, a 6-foot-11 power forward, spent two seasons in Tallahassee but will have three years of eligibility remaining with Albany.

"Richard has proven himself as a student-athlete by, first, taking care of his business in the classroom," said Tallahassee head coach Eddie Barnes. "He overcame a serious injury and, as a result, has gained a better understanding about taking care of his body and the work he'll have to put in going forward to be the player everyone thinks he can be.

A preseason hip injury knocked Peters out of the 2012-13 season. Finally, last fall, the one-time Washington State commit made his collegiate debut with the Eagles, and he eventually played in 24 games, averaging 2.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting just under 50 percent (49.1 percent) from the field.

Prior to enrolling at TCC, Peters spent four years at Brewster Academy and Westwind Prep Academy in Phoenix, Ariz., where he averaged 10.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game as a senior and was a McDonald's All-America nominee.

Peters' resume also includes international experience – in 2009, he represented Canada in the Michael Jordan Classic International Game. He also competed for Canada's Under-17 team that took third place at the FIBA World Championships.

Peters graduated from TCC in May, and he served a two-year term on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Albany, an NCAA Division I program, is the two-time defending America East Conference Tournament champions and captured its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory last season, scoring a First Round victory over Mount St. Mary's University.
