TAMPA, Fla. (November 20, 2017) – Tallahassee Community College rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half, eventually defeating Hillsborough Community College 89-88 in overtime on Monday evening in men's basketball action.
The NJCAA No. 13/Region 8 No. 3 Eagles improved to 6-0 with the improbable victory but not before Hillsborough gave them all they could ask for and then some.
Leading 38-31 at the break, the host Hawks used a 13-2 run to grab a 57-41 lead at the 11:30 mark of the second half. With 6:06 remaining, Hillsborough led 64-50, and Tallahassee still faced a double-digit deficit with 3:15 left in in regulation, trailing 68-57.
Sixty seconds later, the game was tied.
Tallahassee's full-court pressure forced four consecutive turnovers, all resulting in points, then Quentin Jackson went coast to coast off a missed Hillsborough free throw to tie the game at 68 with 2:15 left.
Jacob Winston's 15-footer gave Tallahassee its first lead of the second half, 72-71, at the 2:00 mark. The Eagles eventually led by three in the closing seconds, but Leon Freeman-Daniels was whistled for a foul on the Hawks' game-tying three-point attempt with less than a second remaining. Giovanni Diaz hit all three shots to tie the game at 76-all and force overtime.
Tallahassee outscored Hillsborough, 13-12, in the overtime period to escape with the win.
After a pair of free throws by C.J. Fisher broke an 81-81 tie with 2:40 remaining, the Eagles never trailed again although they did dodge a couple of scares in the final 90 seconds.
Down one, Hillsborough missed two free throws with 1:15 left. After Jackson hit one of two from the line to give Tallahassee a two-point cushion, the Hawks missed a pair of shots from point-blank range that would have tied the game.
Jackson all but sealed the comeback win, hitting two free throws with five seconds left to extend the Eagles' lead to 89-85.
Javien Williams came off the bench to lead the Eagles in scoring with 28 points.
