TCC Softball scores 21 runs in DH sweep of Pensacola State

PENSACOLA, Fla. (March 27, 2014) – Tallahassee Community College added another doubleheader sweep to its tally for 2014 on Thursday, taking two games from host Pensacola State College.

The Eagles won game one in shootout fashion, 12-9. In the nightcap, Mariah Rivera fired a two-hitter in an 8-1 win.

Tallahassee is now 11-1 in PC play.

In the opener, Tallahassee fell behind 3-0 but scored the game's next nine runs to seize control. The Eagles led 12-5 before Pensacola State scored four times in its final at-bat to make things interesting.

Tallahassee racked up 17 hits in game one, led by Alexis Huss and Brianna Murillo who had three hits each.

Both players homered – Huss went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; Murillo was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two driven in.

Danielle Patterson, Te Reo Powhiri Matautia, Dominique Davis and Taesha DuBoise had two hits apiece.

In the circle, Ashley Dobson picked up the game one win for the Eagles. In between the first and last innings, she allowed only two runs and four hits.

In game two, Tallahassee backed Rivera's effort, out hitting the Pirates 10-2 and took advantage of five Pensacola State errors.

The game was never in doubt after the first, as the Eagles scored two runs on an RBI-double by Ashley Heath-Smith and an RBI-single by Huss.

Tallahassee pushed two more runs across in the third and added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 6-0. By that point, the only remaining question was whether or not Rivera would finish things in no-hit fashion.

Pensacola State broke up Rivera's no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth on a double by Ashley Peters. Renae Palacios followed with a single to drive home Peters with the Pirates' first run of the game.

Rivera struck out six while improving her record in league play to 6-0.

Offensively, Patterson, Heath-Smith and Huss had two hits each for the Eagles.

Tallahassee continues Panhandle Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Gulf Coast State College at 1 p.m.
