#TCCSoftball: Eagles take game two, split with SGSC

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 20, 2018) – Callen DeLucas' walk-off single gave Tallahassee Community College a 9-8 win over South Georgia State College in game two to salvage a split of Tuesday's doubleheader at the TCC Softball Complex.

South Georgia State picked up a 2-1 win in the opener.

Tallahassee needed but four batters in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the game two win.

Samantha Malik drew a leadoff walk then advanced to third on Olivia Russell's single to right-center. Following a strikeout, the Hawks intentionally walked Ismay Poot to load the bases.

After falling behind in the count 1-2, DeLucas patiently worked the count full then snuck Sarah Smith's 3-2 pitch past third baseman Logan Mullis and into left field, allowing Malik to trot home from third with the game-winning run.

DeLucas was 2-for-4 with two RBI, one of five players with multiple hits in game two.

Russell was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Monica Marquez also homered and was 2-for-3. Malik was 2-for-3 and scored three times. Poot was 2-for-3 and drove in a run.

DeLucas' game-winning hit, the 14th and final one of the night for Tallahassee, capped a wild nightcap that saw South Georgia State rally from an 8-2 deficit in the sixth inning.

Tallahassee's game two starter Hanna Stapleton pitched into the sixth and retired the Hawks' first batter of the inning. The next six batters reached base, however – by that time it was 8-5 and Stapleton was replaced by Callie Paine

Following a sac-fly for the second out of the inning, Abbi Lewis' two-out single scored Michaelin Thomas and Tess Robinson to tie the game.

Paine (3-1) pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the win.

After spotting the Hawks a first-inning run, Tallahassee got back in the game with the long ball. Russell drilled a two-run shot over the right field fence to put the Eagles in front.

Marquez hit her homer – a two-out solo shot – an inning later and the Eagles led 3-1.

Four different players, including DeLucas, recorded RBIs during a four-run third inning that increased the Eagles' lead to 7-2.

Poot singled home Russell in the fifth, seemingly giving the Eagles control, up 8-2, but South Georgia State sent ten batters to the plate a half inning later to tie the game.

In Tuesday's opener, South Georgia scored two runs in the sixth to pick up the 2-1 win.

Tallahassee took a 1-0 lead on Poot's solo homer in the third and game one starter Shaquoya Williams took a one-hit shutout into the sixth before running into trouble.

After retiring the leadoff batter, Williams yielded four singles, the last by Natalie Reveille to scored Thomas with the go-ahead run.

Tallahassee threatened to tie the game back up in the bottom of the sixth, but Malik was thrown out at home attempting to score from second on Russell's single.

Tallahassee went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

The Eagles had only four hits in the opener, one each by Malik, Russell, Poot and Guilliam.

Williams (1-1) took the hard-luck loss for Tallahassee.

Tallahassee will travel to St. Johns River State College for a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
