#TCCSoftball: Marquez homers twice as Eagles split with SJR

PALATKA, Fla. (February 22, 2018) – Tallahassee Community College picked up a 6-5, eight-inning win in game two to earn a split of Thursday's doubleheader at Region 8 No. 9 St. Johns River State College.

The Vikings won the opener, 8-0 in six innings.

Monica Marquez hit two solo homers in game two – her first, a sixth inning shot that followed Callie Paine's two-run homer, tied the game at 4-all.

Then, with a run already on the board in the top of the eighth, Marquez' second homer proved to be the game-winning run after St. Johns River State scored a run in its half of the inning but ended the game with the tying run in scoring position.

Sidney Mathis (3-3) earned the complete-game victory for Tallahassee. She scattered eight hits over the eight innings, but walked none and struck out four. Only one of the four runs she allowed was earned.

Tallahassee took a 1-0 lead in the second when Lily Adams singled home Marquez from second.

Marquez was 3-for-4 and scored three times.

Aided by a pair of Tallahassee errors, St. Johns River State plated four runs in the bottom of the third and the score remained 4-1 until the back-to-back homers in the sixth.

In game one, the Vikings scored six runs in the first inning against Tallahassee starter Shaquoya Williams (1-2). They added another run in the second then scored the game-ending run in the bottom of the sixth.

Jaycee Thomas (2-for-3) had two of the Eagles' five game one hits.

Tallahassee (7-8) will host the College of Central Florida for a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one will begin at 1 p.m.
