#TCCSoftball splits pair with ABAC

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 5, 2019) – Tallahassee Community College's softball team split a doubleheader with Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) Agricultural College on Tuesday in its 2019 home opener.

Tallahassee won game one, 5-1, but dropped game two, 9-5 in eight innings.

In the opener, the Eagles smacked four solo homers in the 5-1 victory.

Katelyn Hobbs and Monica Marquez opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back home runs. The score remained 2-0 until the fourth.

River Glenn led off the inning with a homer to straightaway center to increase the Eagles' lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Hobbs' two-out single plated Aliyah Guilliam and Tallahassee had a four-run cushion.

Olivia Russell joined the home run parade in the fifth with a shot to center.

Sidney Mathis (2-3) was the beneficiary of the offensive fireworks as she beat the Fillies for the second time in a week.

ABAC had base runners in every inning but the fourth but couldn't break through against Mathis until the top of the seventh. Kelsey Steller's two-out single scored Alexis Meadows to break up Mathis' shutout bid.

Mathis retired Braxton Hill to end the game and strand the last two of ABAC's ten runners in game one.

Hobbs (2-for-4, two RBIs), Russell (2-for-3, RBI) and Glenn (2-for-3, RBI) had two hits each while Marquez was 1-or-3 with an RBI.

In game two, ABAC came from behind in both the sixth and seventh innings before scoring five times in the eighth to win, 9-5.

Tallahassee got on the board first with a run in the fourth. Ismay Poot singled and scored all the way from first on Lily Adams' double to right-center.

Starting pitcher Emma Fowler pitched around ABAC scoring threats for five innings. The Fillies stranded 11 runners through five and left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth. She wasn't as fortunate in the sixth.

With two runners on, Taylor Layfield smacked a three-run homer to center give ABAC its first lead of the day.

Tallahassee got the runs back in its half of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Guilliam's pinch-hit single scored Poot and Adams to tie the game. Hobbs' sac-fly to center scored Dyamond Brown with the go-ahead run.

Leading 4-3, the Eagles needed three outs to complete the sweep, only to watch ABAC tie the score on a safety squeeze and send the game to extra innings.

ABAC scored all five of its runs in the eighth with two outs. Tallahassee scored once in the bottom half and brought the tying run to the plate with just one down, but Taylor Layfield retired Hobbs and Marquez to seal the complete-game victory.

Adams went 4-for-4 in game two for Tallahassee.

Sammie Massaro (1-2) was charged with the loss for the Eagles.

Tallahassee will return to action on Friday and Saturday with games at the Visit Dothan Invitational.
