#TCCSoftball beats Polk, SCF at Seminole Classic

LONGWOOD, Fla. (February 23, 2019) – Tallahassee Community College's softball team picked up two wins on its first day of play at the Seminole State College Classic.

The Eagles shut out Polk State College, 4-0, then defeated Region 8 No. 4 State College of Florida, 4-3, in their second game of the day.

In the first game of the day, Sidney Mathis (5-5) tosses a three-hit shutout as the Eagles picked up the 4-0 victory.

Olivia Russell's first-inning double scored Katelyn Hobbs and that was all the run support Mathis needed. The right-hander walked only one batter and struck out five en route to her fifth win of the season.

The Eagles picked up another run in the second and a couple of insurance runs in the sixth.

Russell was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Against State College of Florida, the Eagles scored four runs in the top of the third and Sammie Massaro and Mathis made it hold up in the 4-3 win.

Massaro (2-4), who picked up the win, allowed a run in the third and was charged with both runs the Manatees scored in the fifth. Mathis came on with two outs in the fifth to halt the rally then pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for her first save.

Tallahassee only had five hits but three came during the decisive fourth inning.

Hobbs doubled home Desera' Wishart with the first run of the game and scored on Russell's single. River Glenn followed with a two-RBI triple to give the Eagles a four-run cushion.

Hobbs was 2-for-4, the lone Tallahassee player with multiple hits.

Tallahassee (9-11) will play two more games on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. against St. Johns River State College.
