COLUMBUS, Ga. (March 8, 2019) – Sidney Mathis pitched a five-hit shutout in Tallahassee Community College's 8-0 win over Wabash Valley (Ill.) College to complete a split on day one of the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Tallahassee (13-13) dropped its first game of the day, falling 10-2 to Navarro (Texas) College. Tallahassee took a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the sixth, only to watch Navarro score ten runs to end the game.
In the Wabash Valley win, Mathis only retired the side in order once but the Warriors only got two base runners past second base.
The Eagles scored in each of the first four innings and led 6-0 heading to the sixth.
Dev Ferguson drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Katelyn Hobbs' double. Monica Marquez singled home Ferguson and, following back-to-back strikeouts, Sara Brugnoli singled home Hobbs with the game-ending run.
Hobbs was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Marquez and Brugnoli drove in two runs each.
