TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 12, 2019) – Tallahassee Community College welcomed NJCAA No. 15 Gulf Coast State College to the TCC Softball Complex on Tuesday and came away with a split in the Panhandle Conference opener for both teams.
The Eagles won game one, 8-0, then dropped the nightcap, 10-3.
Tallahassee played its most complete game of the year in game one en route to the shutout.
Sara Brugnoli's two-out single in the first scored Katelyn Hobbs to give the Eagles the early lead. An inning later, Monica Marquez just missed what would have been a three-run homer to right center. Instead, she settled for a two-RBI double that plated Lily Adams and Dyamond Brown to increase the lead to 3-0.
That was more than enough run support for Sidney Mathis (7-6), who tossed a one-hitter. Brianna Hill's leadoff single in the fourth was the Commodores' only hit and following a one-out walk, Mathis retired the final eight batters she faced.
By the sixth, the lead was 4-0 and Tallahassee ended the game via the mercy rule with four more runs. With three runs already in, Ismay Poot hit a walk-off solo shot to cap the scoring.
Poot finished 1-for-3. Marquez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dyamond Brown was 2-for-3.
Game two was a different story.
The Commodores scored nine runs over the final three innings and won, 10-3.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles needed just two swings to grab momentum and the lead.
Marquez hit an opposite-field homer to tie the game. Three batters later, Sara Brugnoli sent one over the scoreboard and, just like that, the Eagles led 2-1. The lead was short-lived.
With the tying run already in, Allison Shiver hit a three-run homer to give Gulf Coast State a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Gulf Coast State added three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Gulf Coast State outhit Tallahassee, 16-4, in game two. Marquez was the only Tallahassee player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
Tallahassee starter Emma Fowler (2-6) took the loss in the circle for Tallahassee.
The Eagles (14-17) will travel to Niceville, Fla., on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Raiders. Game one starts at 2 p.m. eastern.
