TCC wins 3 of 4 at JUCO Kickoff Classic

CLEARWATER, Fla. (January 28, 2023) – Starting their season at the 2023 JUCO Kickoff Classic, TCC Softball won three of their four games. It was the Eagles' first trip to Clearwater for the event since 2021, where they went 2-2.

The Eagles dropped their first game on Friday afternoon 7-3 to St. Petersburg. They bounced back later that day with a 4-0 shutout win against East Georgia State, led by strong performances from pitchers Sydney Ray (LHP, Soph.) and Kailynn James (RHP/1B, Soph.). Ray pitched the first four innings allowing just four hits and striking out five. James came in and got her first save of the season, pitching the final three innings and allowing no runs on three hits.

James was also a massive contributor at the plate all weekend. She went 8-11 with three home runs, a double, and three RBI. She also pitched 10 innings allowing just one earned run.

Ray appeared in three of the four games in the circle and pitched 8.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out 10. Last season, Ray pitched 83.1 innings with a 3.70 ERA and 58 strikeouts (4.87 K/7), so her strikeout rate is improved through the first four games of the year.

Aneyshka Aponte (OF, Soph.) and SheShe Ortiz (INF, Soph.) also had big weekends offensively, each tallying 5 hits over 15 at bats. Three of Ortiz's hits were of the extra-base variety, two doubles and a triple.

TCC travels to Gainesville on Saturday, February 4th to take on Santa Fe. They open their home schedule the following Tuesday, February 7th against ABAC. The full schedule can be viewed here
