Janessa Murphy on signing with Georgia State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (July 5, 2017) – Janessa Murphy is headed home.

Murphy, a Tallahassee Community College women’s basketball standout and Georgia native, has signed a national letter of intent with Georgia State University, an NCAA Division I institution in Atlanta, Ga.

Murphy’s hometown of McDonough, Ga., located just south of Atlanta, is a relatively short drive from the Panthers’ campus, just one of the factors she took into consideration during the recruiting process.

“Being surrounded by the people who love me and support me was a big part of my decision,” said Murphy. “It’s going to make everything better for me on and off the court.”

Her two years in Tallahassee couldn’t have gone much better.

Playing for Franqua “Q” Bedell’s Eagles from 2015-17, Murphy averaged 9.3 points, 2.4 points, 1.3 assists and 1.6 steals in 60 career games. As a sophomore, she helped Tallahassee to its first NJCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, averaging 10.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals.

“It was a transition on and off the court (coming from high school),” added Murphy. “Coach Q made this experience the best – it was not just about basketball; it was about life. My teammates helped me grow and they are going to be lifelong friends.

“Choosing to attend TCC was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Georgia State competes in the Sun Belt Conference.
